Place 为 before the beneficiary of an action to express "for" or "on behalf of." The subject does something for the benefit of the object introduced by 为.

为 (wèi) as a preposition means "for" — do not confuse it with 为 (wéi) meaning "to be" or "to act as." In the beneficiary sense, it is always pronounced wèi. It is more formal than 给 in the same role.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the 介词:为 pattern

Understanding 介词:为

The preposition 为 (wèi) introduces the beneficiary of an action — the person or group that an action is done for. When you say 妈妈为我们做饭, you are highlighting that Mom cooks specifically for our benefit. While 给 can also mean "for" in casual speech, 为 carries a stronger sense of dedication, sacrifice, or service. It suggests that the action is done with purpose and care. You will often see 为 used in contexts involving family devotion, professional service, and selfless actions. It is slightly more formal and literary than 给, making it common in written Chinese, speeches, and heartfelt statements about doing things for others.

Key Points

  • 为 (wèi) = "for / on behalf of" — introduces the beneficiary of an action.
  • More formal and heartfelt than 给 in the "for someone" sense.
  • Pronounced wèi (4th tone) as a preposition, not wéi (2nd tone).
  • Common in expressions of service and devotion: 为人民服务 (serve the people).
  • Can introduce both people and abstract goals: 为他, 为国家, 为和平.
  • Often appears with verbs of giving, doing, or creating: 为你做, 为他买, 为大家准备.

The phrase 为人民服务 (wèi rénmín fúwù — "serve the people") is one of the most famous slogans in modern Chinese history. Understanding 为 in this sense helps you grasp countless expressions about duty, sacrifice, and community service that permeate Chinese culture.

Tips & Tricks

1

Use 为 when you want to emphasize devotion or service — it sounds warmer and more selfless than 给.

2

Remember: 为 (wèi, 4th tone) = "for someone"; do not mix it up with 为 (wéi, 2nd tone) = "to be."
