Question Words: 多久, 为什么, 怎么样, 怎样
疑问代词:多久、为什么、怎么样、怎样
Ask about duration, reasons, and manner using advanced question words
These question words replace the information you are asking about. Unlike English, Chinese does NOT move them to the front — they stay where the answer would go.
In HSK 1, you learned 什么, 谁, 哪, 几, 多少. Now you expand to asking about duration (多久), reason (为什么), and manner/opinion (怎么样/怎样).

Understanding 疑问代词:多久、为什么、怎么样、怎样
At HSK 1, you could ask "what," "who," "where," and "how many." Now you unlock the deeper questions: "how long," "why," and "how about it." 多久 asks about time duration — how long something takes or has been going on. 为什么 is your "why" — the most philosophical of all question words, and also the most practical when you need an explanation. 怎么样 asks for opinions or descriptions — "How is it? What do you think?" It is incredibly versatile. 怎样 is a slightly more formal variant of 怎么样, more common in writing. Together, these four question words let you have much deeper conversations — you can now explore reasons, evaluate experiences, and discuss time.
Key Points
- 多久 (duōjiǔ) = "how long" — asks about duration of time.
- 为什么 (wèishénme) = "why" — asks for reasons or explanations.
- 怎么样 (zěnmeyàng) = "how / how about it / what do you think" — asks for opinions or descriptions.
- 怎样 (zěnyàng) = same as 怎么样 but slightly more formal.
- These words stay IN PLACE — where the answer would go. No word-order changes.
- 为什么 can start or end a clause: 你为什么没来? or 为什么你没来? — both work.
- 怎么样 at the end of a sentence is a suggestion: 我们去看电影,怎么样?(How about we go see a movie?)
Asking 为什么 too directly can feel confrontational in Chinese culture. Softening with 请问 (may I ask) or adding 呢 at the end makes it more polite: 你为什么没去上课呢?
