Experience with 过
经历态:用动态助词"过"表示
Use the aspect particle 过 to express whether someone has had a life experience
Place 过 after the verb to indicate that the subject has experienced something at some point in the past. The negative form uses 没(有) before the verb, and 过 remains after the verb.
Unlike 了 which focuses on the completion of a specific action, 过 emphasizes the experience itself — whether something has ever happened. The exact time is not important.

Understanding 经历态:用动态助词"过"表示
In HSK 1 you learned 了 to talk about completed actions. Now 过 opens a new dimension — life experience. When you say 我吃过饺子, you are not talking about a specific meal yesterday; you are saying "at some point in my life, I have eaten dumplings." It is like the English present perfect ("I have eaten..."). This is incredibly useful for conversations about travel, food, hobbies, and culture. 你去过中国吗?(Have you ever been to China?) is one of the most common questions Chinese people ask foreigners. The negative is 没(有) + verb + 过: 我没去过中国 (I have never been to China). Notice that 过 stays in the negative — it does not disappear like 了 sometimes does. This particle transforms your Chinese from reporting events to sharing life stories.
Key Points
- 过 (guò) after a verb = "have experienced / have done before" — focuses on life experience.
- Affirmative: 我去过北京。(I have been to Beijing.)
- Negative: 我没(有)去过北京。(I have never been to Beijing.) — 没 goes before the verb, 过 stays.
- Question: 你吃过饺子吗?/ 你吃过饺子没有?(Have you ever eaten dumplings?)
- 过 vs. 了: 我吃了饺子 = I ate dumplings (specific event). 我吃过饺子 = I have eaten dumplings before (life experience).
- Time words like 以前 (before) often appear with 过: 我以前学过中文。
- You can add a number of times: 我去过两次中国。(I have been to China twice.)
Chinese people love asking about experiences — 你去过哪些地方?(What places have you been to?) is a favorite conversation starter. Being able to answer with 过 shows cultural engagement and makes conversations flow naturally.

Common Mistakes
To negate experience, use 没 + verb + 过, not 没 + verb + 了. 了 is for completed actions; 过 is for experience.
Do not add 了 after 过 in the experience pattern. 过 alone is sufficient to express the experience.
The negative of 过 uses 没(有), not 不. Past experience is always negated with 没.
