Combine two equal clauses using coordination. The key connectors are 一边…一边… (doing two things simultaneously), 也 (also), and simple comma juxtaposition.

Unlike English, Chinese compound sentences often skip connectors entirely — two clauses side by side with a comma is perfectly natural.

Understanding 并列复句

In English, we lean heavily on "and" to connect ideas. Chinese is more relaxed — you can often just put two clauses next to each other with a comma, and the connection is understood. When you do want to be explicit, Chinese has elegant patterns like 一边…一边… for simultaneous actions (eating while watching TV) and 也 to add related information. These structures make your Chinese sound natural and flowing rather than choppy. Think of it like music: English needs connectors as glue between notes, but Chinese lets the notes flow together naturally, and the listener fills in the harmony. Mastering these patterns is what separates "I sound like a textbook" from "I sound like a real speaker."

Key Points

  • Simple juxtaposition: just put two clauses side by side with a comma — 我喜欢唱歌,他喜欢跳舞。
  • 一边…一边…: two actions happening at the same time — 她一边吃饭,一边看手机。
  • 也: adds a parallel fact — 我喜欢苹果,我也喜欢香蕉。
  • 又…又…: describes two qualities of the same thing — 这个房间又大又亮。
  • These clauses are equal in weight — neither is subordinate to the other
  • 还 (hái) adds "in addition" or "also" — 他会说中文,还会说日文 (He speaks Chinese, and also speaks Japanese)
  • 不但…而且… takes 也 up a notch: "not only... but also" — 她不但会唱歌,而且唱得很好
  • When using 又…又…, both adjectives should be the same polarity (both positive or both negative)

Chinese speakers love the 一边…一边… pattern in storytelling. It paints a vivid picture by showing multitasking: 他一边走路,一边想问题 (He walked while thinking about the problem). It adds a cinematic quality to descriptions.

Common Mistakes

我一边吃饭一边看电视一边打电话。
我一边吃饭,一边看电视。

The 一边…一边… pattern is typically used for exactly TWO simultaneous actions. Stacking three sounds awkward.

他也喜欢打球,喜欢游泳。
他喜欢打球,也喜欢游泳。

也 belongs in the SECOND clause, before the verb, to mean "also does [second thing]." Putting it in the first clause changes the meaning.

这个又又贵好看。
这个又贵又好看。

Each 又 must be immediately followed by its own adjective: 又 + Adj1 + 又 + Adj2.

fill blank

她___做饭,___听音乐。(She cooks while listening to music.)

Tips & Tricks

1

Use 一边…一边… only for actions, not for states. You can say 一边吃饭一边看电视 (eating while watching TV), but not 一边高一边矮 (being tall while being short).

2

When in doubt about whether to use a connector, try without one first. Chinese sentences often sound more natural without explicit "and" words.

3

Practice 又…又… for describing food — Chinese food reviews love this pattern: 又辣又香 (both spicy and fragrant)!

4

Try narrating your daily routine using compound sentences. Instead of short choppy sentences, chain them: 我一边吃早饭,一边看新闻 — it sounds much more natural.

5

If you want to describe someone's personality, 又…又… is perfect: 他又聪明又努力 (He is both smart and hardworking).

Homework

Describe your morning routine using at least three compound sentences. Use 一边…一边… for things you do simultaneously, 也 for things you additionally do, and 又…又… to describe something with two qualities.
