Purpose Compound: 为了..., ...

为了……,…… · wèile……, ……

Express purpose and motivation using 为了 at the beginning of a sentence

Pattern为了 + 目的 ,主语 + 动作Place 为了 before the purpose or goal, followed by a comma, then state the action taken to achieve that goal. The 为了 clause can also come after the main clause for emphasis on the action.

为了保持健康,他每天坚持运动。

Wèile bǎochí jiànkāng, tā měitiān jiānchí yùndòng.

In order to stay healthy, he exercises every day.

为了学好中文,我每天都要看中国电视剧。

Wèile xué hǎo Zhōngwén, wǒ měitiān dōu yào kàn Zhōngguó diànshìjù.

In order to learn Chinese well, I watch Chinese TV dramas every day.

为了省钱,她很少在外面吃饭。

Tight Sequence: ...了...(就)...

……了……(就)…… · ……le……(jiù)……

Express actions that happen in tight sequence using the 了...(就)... pattern

Pattern主语 + 动词₁ + 了 + 宾语₁ + (就) + 动词₂ + 宾语₂The first action is marked with 了, and the second action follows immediately, often connected by 就. This pattern emphasizes that the second action happens right after or as a direct consequence of the first.

他下了课就去图书馆。

Tā xià le kè jiù qù túshūguǎn.

As soon as class ends, he goes to the library.

他喝了酒就会脸红。

Tā hē le jiǔ jiù huì liǎn hóng.

As soon as he drinks alcohol, his face turns red.

我到了北京就给你打电话。

Wǒ dào le Běijīng jiù gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà.

I'll call you as soon as I arrive in Beijing.

Approximate Numbers 2

Express approximate quantities using 大概, 大约, 几, adjacent numbers, 左右, and 前后

Pattern(1) 大概/大约/几 + number (2) adjacent numbers: 三四个 (3) number + 左右/前后Chinese has multiple strategies for expressing approximate numbers: adverbs like 大概 and 大约 before the number, the indefinite 几 meaning "a few," combining adjacent numbers (三四个), and using 左右 or 前后 after the number.

这个手机大概两千块。

Zhège shǒujī dàgài liǎng qiān kuài.

This phone is about 2000 yuan.

我的中文老师大约三十岁。

Wǒ de Zhōngwén lǎoshī dàyuē sānshí suì.

My Chinese teacher is approximately 30 years old.

我上网买了几本书。

Wǒ shàngwǎng mǎi le jǐ běn shū.

I bought a few books online.

Emphasis with 一点儿也不...

用"一点儿也不……"表示强调 · yòng "yìdiǎnr yě bù……" biǎoshì qiángdiào

Use 一点儿也不/没 to emphatically negate — meaning "not at all"

Pattern主语 + 一点儿也/都 + 不/没 + 动词/形容词Place 一点儿也 or 一点儿都 before 不 or 没 to create an emphatic negation meaning "not at all" or "not even a little bit." 也 and 都 are interchangeable here.

中文一点儿也不简单。

Zhōngwén yìdiǎnr yě bù jiǎndān.

Chinese is not simple at all.

这双球鞋穿着一点儿也不舒服。

Zhè shuāng qiúxié chuānzhe yìdiǎnr yě bù shūfu.

These sneakers are not comfortable at all to wear.

今天一点儿都不冷。

Jīntiān yìdiǎnr dōu bù lěng.

It's not cold at all today.

Rhetorical Questions for Emphasis

用反问句表示强调 · yòng fǎnwènjù biǎoshì qiángdiào

Use rhetorical questions with 不是...吗 and 难道...吗 to emphasize a point

Pattern不是 + statement + 吗? / 难道 + statement + 吗?Rhetorical questions do not seek an answer — they make a strong assertion. 不是...吗?implies "Isn't it the case that...?" while 难道...吗?implies "Don't tell me that...?" or "Surely...?" Both are used for emphasis, not for asking genuine questions.

今天不是星期天吗?

Jīntiān bù shì xīngqītiān ma?

Isn't today Sunday? (It IS Sunday!)

难道你没去过长城吗?

Nándào nǐ méi qù guò Chángchéng ma?

Don't tell me you've never been to the Great Wall?

这不是你的书吗?

Zhè bù shì nǐ de shū ma?

Isn't this your book? (It IS yours!)

Using 是 for Emphasis

用"是"强调 · yòng "shì" qiángdiào

Use 是 before adjectives and verbs to add emphasis, meaning "indeed / really"

Pattern主语 + 是 + 很/挺/真 + 形容词/动词Insert 是 before an adjective or verb phrase to add emphatic confirmation, meaning "indeed" or "really is." This 是 is stressed in speech and confirms or agrees with a previously stated opinion.

你说得对,这位经理是很负责。

Nǐ shuō de duì, zhè wèi jīnglǐ shì hěn fùzé.

You're right, this manager is indeed very responsible.

我同意,那个电影是挺有意思。

Wǒ tóngyì, nàge diànyǐng shì tǐng yǒu yìsi.

I agree, that movie is quite interesting indeed.

北京是很大,但是交通很方便。

Běijīng shì hěn dà, dànshì jiāotōng hěn fāngbiàn.

Beijing IS very big, but the transportation is convenient.
