Nominal Predicate Sentences

主谓句3:名词谓语句 · zhǔwèijù: míngcí wèiyǔ jù

Form sentences where a noun or noun phrase serves as the predicate without 是

Pattern主语 + 名词/名词短语The subject is directly followed by a noun or noun phrase that acts as the predicate. No 是 is needed. These sentences typically describe dates, weather, age, price, origin, or other identifying features.

明天阴天。

Míngtiān yīntiān.

Tomorrow will be overcast.

他中国人。

Tā Zhōngguó rén.

He is Chinese.

现在八点三十分。

Xiànzài bā diǎn sānshí fēn.

It is now 8:30.

"有" Sentences 2: Estimation and Degree

"有"字句2 · "yǒu" zì jù 2

Use 有 to express estimations of measurement and degree that something reaches

Pattern主语 + 有 + 数量短语 + 形容词Use 有 before a number + measure word + adjective to indicate that something reaches or attains a certain measurement or degree. This is not about possession — it is about estimation.

他有一米八高。

Tā yǒu yì mǐ bā gāo.

He is 1.8 meters tall.

他有三十多岁。

Tā yǒu sānshí duō suì.

He is about thirty-something years old.

这条河有一百米宽。

Zhè tiáo hé yǒu yì bǎi mǐ kuān.

This river is a hundred meters wide.

Existential Sentences: Expressing Existence

存现句1:表示存在 · cúnxiàn jù: biǎoshì cúnzài

Describe what exists or is positioned at a location using existential sentence patterns

Pattern处所 + 有/动词+着 (+ 数量短语) + 名词Start with the location, then use 有 or a verb + 着 to indicate what exists or is positioned there, followed by the thing that exists. Pattern 1: 处所 + 有 + (数量短语) + 名词. Pattern 2: 处所 + 动词 + 着 + (数量短语) + 名词.

桌子上放着一本词典。

Zhuōzi shàng fàng zhe yì běn cídiǎn.

A dictionary is placed on the table.

教室前边站着一位老师。

Jiàoshì qiánbian zhàn zhe yí wèi lǎoshī.

A teacher is standing in front of the classroom.

桌子上放着书、笔和本子。

Zhuōzi shàng fàng zhe shū, bǐ hé běnzi.

Books, pens, and notebooks are placed on the table.

Serial Verb Sentences: Sequential Actions

连动句1:表示前后动作先后发生 · liándòng jù: biǎoshì qiánhòu dòngzuò xiānhòu fāshēng

Express a sequence of actions happening one after another in a single sentence

Pattern主语 + 动词1 (+ 宾语1) + 动词2 (+ 宾语2)Two or more verb phrases share the same subject, with the actions occurring in chronological order. No conjunction like "and then" is needed — the order of the verbs shows the order of events.

他开门出去了。

Tā kāi mén chūqù le.

He opened the door and went out.

我们吃完饭去图书馆吧。

Wǒmen chī wán fàn qù túshūguǎn ba.

Let us finish eating and then go to the library.

他每天坐公共汽车上班。

Tā měitiān zuò gōnggòng qìchē shàngbān.

He takes the bus to work every day.

Comparative Sentences 2: Specific Differences

比较句2 · bǐjiào jù 2

Make comparisons with specific quantity differences and intensified degree using 比

Pattern(1) A 比 B + 形容词 + 数量补语 | (2) A 比 B + 更/还 + 形容词Pattern 1: Use 比 with a specific quantity to show exactly how much A exceeds B. Pattern 2: Use 更 (even more) or 还 (even more, with surprise) to intensify the comparison.

姐姐比我大两岁。

Jiějie bǐ wǒ dà liǎng suì.

My older sister is two years older than me.

房间外边比里边凉快一些。

Fángjiān wàibian bǐ lǐbian liángkuai yìxiē.

Outside the room is somewhat cooler than inside.

他的手机比我的更贵。

Tā de shǒujī bǐ wǒ de gèng guì.

His phone is even more expensive than mine.
