This is the honest version rather than the reassuring one. Some of what we record is the product itself and cannot be switched off while you use it; some is genuinely optional and is not collected if you decline. Knowing which is which is more useful than a blanket promise.
Your learning record — not optional
Every answer you give, every checkpoint you complete, and the mastery, retention and error patterns derived from them. This is what schedules your flashcard reviews, fills your progress figures and produces the Learning Lab.
It is not governed by the cookie banner, and saying otherwise would be dishonest — a spaced-repetition system that is not allowed to remember how you did is not a spaced-repetition system. If you do not want us to hold it, the way to stop it is to delete your account, which removes it.
What IS optional
Per-checkpoint active study time — how long you actually spend on a piece of content, with the timer pausing when the tab is hidden or you go idle. We use it to measure engagement and improve how content is paced.
If you decline the analytics category, this is not collected at all. Not collected and discarded — not collected. Everything else about the site keeps working.
What we never do
- Show your typed text to a teacher or parent — No teacher-facing or guardian-facing endpoint returns text you wrote. Not tutor conversations, not free-text answers, not messages.
- Publish a group figure below five learners — Medians and cohort comparisons are withheld under five, because an average plus one known score identifies the rest.
- Expose your email in the tutor directory — That endpoint never returns an address, to anyone.
- Let anyone message you outside your circles — Enforced on the server, not hidden in the interface.
What you control
- Cookie preferences — From your account settings, under Privacy, at any time — not only on first visit.
- Whether your bio is public — A separate switch from writing one. An unpublished bio is not shown to anyone.
- Whether you appear in the tutor directory — An explicit opt-in, and reversible immediately.
- What we email you — Every category, individually. See emails we send.
- Whether the account exists at all — Export and deletion are both self-service. See exporting or deleting your data.
The formal versions
Common questions
Not while signed in and studying — the record is what makes review scheduling and progress work. The reference half of the site (dictionary, grammar, culture) needs no account at all, and signed out there is no learning record to keep.
