+ /() + A + B

This pattern expresses a double contrast: not only did the expected thing NOT happen (不但不/没有 A), but the opposite actually occurred (反而 B). It conveys surprise, frustration, or irony.

Use 不但不 when the verb is negated in the present/habitual sense. Use 不但没(有) when the action did not happen in the past. 反而 means "on the contrary / instead" and introduces the unexpected result.

Understanding 不但不/不但没有……,反而……

This is one of the most expressive patterns in Chinese for conveying disappointed expectations. When you say 他不但不帮我,反而还给我添麻烦, you are expressing double frustration: "Not only did he NOT help me — he actually made things WORSE!" The pattern has two layers: first, the expected positive action did not happen (不但不/没有); second, the opposite negative thing happened instead (反而). It is incredibly useful for storytelling, complaints, and argumentative writing. The emotional impact is strong — it signals that reality went completely against expectations. Mastering this pattern will allow you to express complex, layered feelings of surprise and frustration that are essential in advanced Chinese communication.

Key Points

  • 不但不 + verb: the expected action is NOT being done (present/habitual).
  • 不但没(有) + verb: the expected action was NOT done (past).
  • 反而 (fǎn'ér) = "on the contrary / instead" — introduces the unexpected opposite result.
  • The result after 反而 is always contrary to what was expected or hoped for.
  • 还 can be added after 反而 for extra emphasis: 反而还……
  • This pattern is common in both spoken and written Chinese.
  • Similar to English: "Not only didn't he help, he actually made it worse."

This pattern reflects a common Chinese rhetorical device called 转折 (zhuǎnzhé) — the "turn." Chinese argumentation and storytelling often build expectations and then dramatically reverse them. Using 不但不……反而…… masterfully is considered a sign of eloquent Chinese.
