Pattern: 不...也... (Even Without...Still...)
不……也……
Express that someone will do something even at the cost of not doing something else using 不...也...
Use 不...也... to express that the subject will carry out Action B even if it means giving up or not doing Action A. The pattern emphasizes determination or priority — Action B is so important that Action A can be sacrificed.
This pattern conveys strong determination similar to 哪怕...也..., but specifically frames the sacrifice as "not doing" something. It often implies that Action A is normally expected or desirable (eating, sleeping, resting), making the sacrifice more dramatic. 要, 会, or 得 often appears before Action B for emphasis.

Understanding 不……也……
The 不...也... pattern is used to express that someone will do something even at the cost of forgoing something else. When you say 我不睡觉也要把这篇作文写完, you are saying "Even if I do not sleep, I will finish this essay." The first action (sleeping) is something normally expected or needed, and giving it up shows how important the second action is. This pattern is powerful because it frames determination in terms of sacrifice — what the person is willing to give up reveals how much the other thing matters. It appears frequently in everyday speech when people want to show commitment, urgency, or strong priorities. The pattern is similar in spirit to 哪怕...也..., but 不...也... specifically uses the negative form of one action to highlight the priority of another.
Key Points
- 不 + Action A shows what the person is willing to sacrifice or skip.
- 也 + Action B shows what they will do regardless — the priority action.
- Action A is typically something normal or expected: eating, sleeping, resting, spending money.
- The sacrifice of Action A emphasizes how important Action B is.
- 要, 会, or 得 is often added before Action B for emphasis: 不吃饭也要完成.
- Similar to 哪怕不...也..., but more direct and compact.
This pattern reflects the Chinese cultural value of 吃苦 (chīkǔ, eating bitterness / enduring hardship). Willingness to sacrifice personal comfort for a goal is deeply admired. Statements like 不吃饭也要把工作做完 (Even without eating, I will finish the work) are seen as admirable expressions of dedication, not complaints.
Key Vocabulary
Example Sentences
今天晚上我不睡觉也要把这篇作文写完。
Tonight I will finish this essay even if I do not sleep.
他不吃饭也要帮我修电脑。
He will help me fix my computer even without eating.
他不休息也要玩儿手机游戏。
He would rather not rest than stop playing mobile games.
她不花钱也要想办法把这件事办好。
She will find a way to handle this even without spending money.
我不请假也要去参加你的婚礼。
I will attend your wedding even without taking time off work.
他不喝水也要先把这个任务完成。
He will finish this task first even without drinking water.
Common Mistakes
The order matters: 不 + sacrificed action comes first, then 也 + priority action. Moving 也 before 不 changes the meaning entirely.
Adding 要 (want to / will) after 也 strengthens the determination. Without 要, the sentence sounds like a simple description rather than an expression of resolve.
The subject must come before 不. Chinese word order: subject + 不 + verb + 也 + 要 + verb.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
The "sacrifice" action (after 不) should be something people normally do: eat, sleep, rest, spend money. This makes the determination more dramatic.
Always put 不 + sacrifice BEFORE 也 + priority. Think: "I will NOT do X, but STILL do Y."
Add 要 after 也 for stronger determination: 不睡觉也要... sounds more resolute than 不睡觉也...
Compare with 哪怕: 哪怕不睡觉,也要写完 means the same thing but is more formal. 不睡觉也要写完 is more direct and colloquial.
Homework
Write six sentences using 不...也要... about things you are determined to accomplish. For each, sacrifice a different daily activity (sleeping, eating, resting, watching TV, playing games, going out) to show how important your goal is.
