X X/ + reservation

This pattern first acknowledges or concedes that something has quality X, then introduces a "but" — a reservation, limitation, or minor complaint. X is typically an adjective or verb that gets repeated around 是.

X can be an adjective (好看是好看, 方便是方便) or a verb (喜欢是喜欢). 就是 introduces the reservation more directly, while 不过 is softer and more conversational. This pattern is very common in spoken Chinese.

Understanding ……X是X,就是/不过……

The X是X pattern is a wonderfully nuanced Chinese structure for making concessions. It lets you say "yes, I admit X is true, BUT there is a catch." For example, 好看是好看,就是有点儿贵 — "It is good-looking, sure, but it is a bit expensive." You are not denying the quality; you are acknowledging it and then revealing the downside. This makes your speech sound balanced and thoughtful rather than bluntly negative. The repeated word X creates a rhythmic, almost shrugging effect — as if you are nodding your head before raising an objection. This pattern is extremely common in daily conversation, especially when shopping, evaluating options, or giving opinions. It is one of those structures that instantly makes your Chinese sound more native and sophisticated.

Key Points

  • X 是 X — acknowledges quality X as true. X is repeated around 是.
  • 就是 introduces the catch or drawback (slightly direct).
  • 不过 introduces the reservation more softly.
  • X is usually an adjective (好看, 方便, 便宜) or verb (喜欢, 想去).
  • The reservation after 就是/不过 is typically a minor issue, not a deal-breaker.
  • Very common in spoken Chinese — makes you sound natural and balanced.

Chinese communication often values indirectness and balance. Rather than saying "I do not like it because it is expensive," it is more socially graceful to say 好看是好看,就是贵了点儿 — you validate the positive first before gently mentioning the negative. This face-saving approach is deeply embedded in Chinese conversational culture.
