Ditransitive Sentences (双宾语句)

双宾语句 · shuāng bīnyǔ jù

Give, tell, teach — verbs that take TWO objects in a row

PatternSubject + V + IndirectObj + DirectObj双宾语句 (ditransitive sentences) take TWO objects in a row: first the recipient (a person), then the thing. The HSK 1 verbs in this slot are 给 (give), 教 (teach), 告诉 (tell), 问 (ask), 送 (send / give as gift).

我给你一本书。

Wǒ gěi nǐ yì běn shū.

I'll give you a book.

老师教我们汉语。

Lǎoshī jiāo wǒmen Hànyǔ.

The teacher teaches us Chinese.

我告诉他这件事。

Wǒ gàosu tā zhè jiàn shì.

I told him this matter.

Personal Pronouns

人称代词 · rénchēng dàicí

Use personal pronouns naturally, including polite 您

Pattern代词 + 动词/形容词/是…Personal pronouns work as subjects (I, you, he) or objects. Add 们 to make plurals. Add 的 to show possession.

您好!

Nín hǎo!

Hello! (polite)

他们是学生。

Tāmen shì xuéshēng.

They are students.

这是我的书。

Zhè shì wǒ de shū.

This is my book.

Demonstrative Pronouns

指示代词 · zhǐshì dàicí

Point out people, things, and places using this/that

Pattern这/那 + (量词) + 名词Use 这 (this) for things close by and 那 (that) for things farther away. When pointing at a specific item, add a measure word between the demonstrative and the noun.

这是我的手机。

Zhè shì wǒ de shǒujī.

This is my phone.

那个人是谁?

Nàge rén shì shéi?

Who is that person?

你坐这里。

Nǐ zuò zhèlǐ.

Sit here.
