HSK 2 looks like HSK 1 with more words, and the word count is the least interesting thing about it. The paper grows from 40 questions to 60, the listening section nearly doubles, and the pictures start to run out — you are increasingly asked to understand a sentence rather than match an image. This is what changes, and what to do about it.
HSK 2 at a glance
- New words
- 772
- Grammar points
- 84
- Lessons
- 76
- Units
- 16
- Exam length
- 47min
The 772 words are new ones, on top of HSK 1’s 500 — so a candidate sitting HSK 2 is responsible for roughly 1,270 in total. The exam will not warn you which band a word came from, and the HSK 1 vocabulary is where careless marks are lost, because it is the part everyone assumes is finished.
What the paper asks

- Testing time
- 47 min

- 2
- 听力Listeningaudio
Picture judgements, then short dialogues with a question about each.
- 阅读Reading
Picture matching, word-bank gap fill, and matching sentences into pairs.
The listening audio is played once, for the whole room. You cannot pause it, replay it, or go back to a question after its recording has finished — which is why practice under the clock matters more at HSK 2 than any amount of extra vocabulary.
Listening is now the larger half: 35 of the 60 questions and 25 of the 47 testing minutes. If you budget your preparation by section, budget it that way too. There is still no writing section — HSK 2 is the last level at which you are never asked to produce a character.
What is actually hard at this level
- Two speakers instead of one — HSK 1 plays you an utterance. HSK 2 plays a short exchange and then asks a question about it, which means holding two turns in your head while a third thing is asked. That is a working-memory task as much as a language one.
- Words you half-know — At 1,270 words the syllabus passes the point where you can hold all of it actively. The exam finds the half-known ones reliably, because the distractors are chosen from the same semantic field.
- Aspect and time — 了, 过, 在 and 要…了 all arrive around here, and all of them change when something happened rather than what. Listening questions love them precisely because they are easy to miss at speed.
- Measure words — They are pure memorisation with no system behind them, they are individually trivial, and collectively they are a steady drip of lost marks. Learn each one attached to its noun, never as a list.
How to prepare for it
- Re-test HSK 1 before you add HSK 2 — Sit the free HSK 1 mock paper cold. Anything you miss there is a hole you will carry into a harder paper with less time per question.
- Work the course in order — The HSK 2 course runs 76 lessons across 16 units. The order matters more than at HSK 1, because the grammar now compounds — aspect markers only make sense after the verbs they attach to.
- Do dictation, not just listening — Write down what you hear, then compare. It is slower and far more uncomfortable than listening comprehension, and it is the only practice that finds the sounds you have been quietly guessing.
- Describe your own day — Four to six connected sentences, out loud, daily. HSK 2 is the level where Chinese stops being single utterances and starts being sequences, and sequences are built by producing them.
- Practise with the pinyin off — HSK 2 still prints it. HSK 3 does not. The cheapest thing you can do for your future self is stop reading it now, while the vocabulary is still small enough that it hurts only a little.
Should you sit HSK 2 or go straight to HSK 3?
HSK 2 is rarely required by anybody, so the question is really about pacing rather than credentials. Sit it if you want a second deadline a few months after the first, or if HSK 3 is far enough away that you need something in between to aim at.
Skip it if you are already reading without pinyin and can follow a short dialogue, because the jump from HSK 2 to HSK 3 is the largest on the whole ladder — the paper gains a section, gains 33 minutes, and stops printing pinyin — and time spent on HSK 2 is time not spent absorbing that.
Registering and sitting it
Which HSK should you sit?
Pick the level you are considering. You will get what the paper asks of you, what the syllabus behind it contains, and what the certificate is typically used for — before you pay a registration fee.
Not sure where you stand? The grammar placement check puts you on a band in a few minutes, and every level above has one free mock paper you can sit without an account.

Common questions
Like HSK 1, HSK 2 is reported out of 200 with 120 as the conventional pass. Listening and reading contribute 100 each, so a strong reading score can carry a weak listening one — but only to a point, and the listening section is the larger of the two in question count.
