The red bar under the site header is the same strip for everybody, but what it contains depends on what kind of account you have. Signed out it is an invitation; signed in it is your workspace. This article covers what each tab opens and why yours might not match a screenshot.
Signed out
The bar reads "Start your Chinese Learning Journey" with a Start Now button, and clicking anywhere on it opens onboarding. That is its whole function — there are no tabs until you have an account for them to be about.
As a learner
Four tabs. Each opens a panel over the page rather than navigating away, so you keep your place.
- Daily — Today’s study — what your plan has scheduled, and the day’s Chinese. The tab most people use most.
- Stats — XP, streak, words and characters learned, and how far through each HSK level you are.
- Calendar — Your schedule laid out by day, plus the Chinese calendar — lunar dates, solar terms and festivals.
- Guide — An index of every feature with a search box, three guided journeys, and a walkthrough of any single area. It is where the written help centre is linked from too.
If you teach, or you are a parent
The bar swaps its tabs for the ones your role needs. You keep your own learner surfaces — they move into the app itself rather than the bar.
- Tutors — Roster, Assignments, Progress, Guide — Your learners, the homework you have set, what they have actually done, and a tutor-specific guide.
- Parents — Family, Stats, Explore, Guide — Your children, each child’s progress, a launcher of things they could practise, and a parent-specific guide.
- Admins — one tab per admin area — Only on admin routes; elsewhere an admin sees the learner tabs like everyone else.
On a phone
Below about 600px the labels drop and the tabs become icons, so all four still fit on one row. Same tabs, same panels, same order — only the words are gone.
If the bar is not there
Two ordinary reasons. You are signed out, in which case you get the invitation bar rather than the tabs. Or you have not finished onboarding, in which case the tabs would have nothing to show and the bar waits until you have.
The bar is also hidden inside focus mode, deliberately — that mode exists to remove everything except the thing you are reading.
Common questions
Because the tabs follow your account type. Learners get Daily, Stats, Calendar and Guide; tutors get Roster, Assignments, Progress and Guide; parents get Family, Stats, Explore and Guide.
