It is the Chinese equivalent of English "unless…otherwise." In 除非坐飞机去，否则肯定来不及了, the speaker warns that the only way to make it in time is to fly — any other option leads to being late. This pattern is powerful for urgency and warnings. 否则 is the formal version ("otherwise") while 不然 is its colloquial twin. The logic is: the 除非 condition is the ONLY escape route from the negative outcome in the 否则/不然 clause. This makes the pattern inherently dramatic and persuasive — you are essentially saying "do X or face consequences."

Common Mistakes
The 否则 clause must state a NEGATIVE consequence — what goes wrong without the condition. A positive result after 否则 contradicts the pattern logic.
