AA / AA / AA / ABAB

Repeat the verb to soften the action, making it sound brief, casual, or tentative. Single-character verbs use AA or A一A patterns; two-character verbs use ABAB.

This is one of the most charming features of Chinese. Reduplication makes everything sound lighter and friendlier — like the difference between "look" and "take a look" in English.

Understanding 动词重叠

Imagine the difference between "Sit down" and "Have a seat." One sounds like an order, the other sounds like an invitation. Chinese verb reduplication does exactly this — it softens an action, making it feel brief, casual, and non-threatening. 看 (look) becomes 看看 (take a look). 想 (think) becomes 想想 (think about it for a bit). 试 (try) becomes 试试 (give it a try). This pattern is everywhere in daily Chinese and it instantly makes your speech sound more natural and friendly. There are several forms: single-character verbs use 看看 (AA) or 看一看 (A一A) or 看了看 (A了A, for past tense). Two-character verbs use the ABAB pattern: 休息 becomes 休息休息 (take a little rest). Once you start using this, your Chinese will sound warmer and more native.

Key Points

  • AA pattern: 看 → 看看, 说 → 说说, 听 → 听听 — the simplest and most common form.
  • A一A pattern: 看一看, 想一想, 试一试 — slightly more deliberate, but same soft meaning.
  • A了A pattern: 看了看, 想了想 — used for past tense: "took a brief look" / "thought about it briefly."
  • ABAB pattern for two-character verbs: 休息 → 休息休息, 介绍 → 介绍介绍.
  • Reduplication makes requests polite: 你帮帮我 sounds much friendlier than 你帮我.
  • It implies the action is brief or not a big deal — reducing pressure on the listener.
  • You CANNOT reduplicate adjectives this way — that is a different grammar point (see GP-08).
  • Negation: do NOT negate reduplicated verbs. Say 不想看 not 不看看.

Chinese speakers use reduplication constantly to be polite and indirect. A shopkeeper might say 你看看 (Take a look) instead of a hard sell. A friend might say 我想想 (Let me think about it) to buy time without saying no directly.

Common Mistakes

我不看看这本书。
我不想看这本书。Wǒ bù xiǎng kàn zhè běn shū.

Do NOT negate reduplicated verbs. Reduplication implies a brief, positive action — it does not combine with 不.

我们休息了休息。
我们休息休息吧。/ 我们休息了一会儿。Wǒmen xiūxi xiūxi ba. / Wǒmen xiūxi le yíhuìr.

The A了A pattern is only for single-character verbs. Two-character verbs use ABAB or add 了一会儿.

Tips & Tricks

1

Start using reduplication in daily requests immediately — it makes everything sound friendlier.

2

At restaurants: 我看看菜单 (Let me look at the menu). At stores: 我试试这件 (Let me try this on).

3

When someone asks for your opinion, buy time with 我想想 (Let me think about it).

4

Remember: AA for single-char verbs, ABAB for two-char verbs. Never AABB for verbs (that is for adjectives).

Homework

List five single-character verbs and five two-character verbs. Write a sentence for each using the correct reduplication pattern (AA or ABAB).
