Emphasis with 就
用"就"表示强调
Use 就 to add emphasis, confirmation, or assertiveness to statements
Place 就 before the verb (often 是 or 在) to emphasize certainty. It adds a tone of "precisely," "exactly," or "right there."
就 has many uses in Chinese. Here we focus on its emphatic function — when you want to point something out or confirm something with confidence.

Understanding 用"就"表示强调
You may have seen 就 in other patterns, but here we focus on one powerful use: emphasis. When you say 教学楼就在前边, you are not just giving directions — you are saying "the teaching building is RIGHT there in front." The 就 adds a sense of "exactly, precisely, right here/there." It can also express determination: 我就要这个 means "I want exactly this one" with a firm, decisive tone. In conversation, 就 as emphasis makes you sound confident and clear. It is like putting verbal bold on your sentence. This use of 就 is everywhere in spoken Chinese — from giving directions (就在那儿 — right over there) to confirming identity (这就是我的老师 — this is precisely my teacher) to asserting decisions (我就不去 — I simply will not go).
Key Points
- 就 before 是: 这就是我们的教室。(This is exactly our classroom.)
- 就 before 在: 商店就在前边。(The shop is right up ahead.)
- 就 for certainty: adds "precisely / exactly / right" to the statement.
- 就 for determination: 我就要这个。(I want exactly this one — my mind is made up.)
- 就 for confirmation: 对,就是他。(Yes, it is precisely him.)
- The emphatic 就 is unstressed in speech — it blends naturally into the sentence.
- Without 就, the sentence is still grammatical, but loses its punch.
Using 就 for emphasis is a hallmark of natural spoken Chinese. When Chinese people give directions, they almost always include 就: 就在前面, 就在旁边, 就在对面. It reassures the listener that the destination is close and easy to find.
