Adjective Reduplication: AA & AABB
形容词重叠:AA、AABB
Make descriptions more vivid and emphatic by reduplicating adjectives
Single-character adjectives reduplicate as AA (大 → 大大的). Two-character adjectives where AB are both adjectives reduplicate as AABB (高兴 → 高高兴兴).
Unlike verb reduplication (which softens), adjective reduplication INTENSIFIES — it makes descriptions more vivid, emphatic, and often affectionate.

Understanding 形容词重叠:AA、AABB
In GP-04, you learned that repeating verbs makes actions softer. Adjective reduplication does the opposite — it makes descriptions MORE vivid and lively. 大 (big) becomes 大大的 (nice and big). 干净 (clean) becomes 干干净净 (perfectly clean, spotlessly clean). This pattern paints a picture — when you say 高高兴兴地回家了, you can almost see the person skipping home happily. It adds color, emotion, and emphasis to your descriptions. You will hear it constantly in storytelling, descriptions of people, and everyday exclamations. The key difference from verbs: verb reduplication = softer; adjective reduplication = stronger and more vivid.
Key Points
- AA pattern: 大 → 大大(的), 高 → 高高(的), 好 → 好好(的) — single-character adjectives.
- AABB pattern: 高兴 → 高高兴兴, 漂亮 → 漂漂亮亮, 干净 → 干干净净.
- Reduplicated adjectives before nouns usually take 的: 大大的眼睛 (big, beautiful eyes).
- Reduplicated adjectives as adverbs take 地: 高高兴兴地走了 (left happily).
- The tone of the second syllable in AA often changes to tone 1: 大大 → dà dā.
- This pattern adds warmth and vividness — it is common in spoken Chinese and storytelling.
- Not all adjectives can be reduplicated — it works best with descriptive, gradable adjectives.
Chinese parents use reduplication constantly when talking to children: 好好吃饭 (eat properly), 快快长大 (grow up quickly). It adds a tender, affectionate quality to the language.
